Strictly speaking a palette knife is a long, straight blade or spatula used for mixing paints and scraping a palette clean, not applying paint to a canvas.
But they can also be used for painting. Painting with a knife produces quite a different result to a brush. They are excellent for producing textured impasto work and sweeping areas of colour.
We use either a palette or painting knife to fill holes in our gallery walls during our rehangs!
